Stability concern for 2020 Fuel

Time for some FREE chemistry crash course

A major concern for 2020 Fuel is the stability and compatibility concern. Many owners have questions that why now they can bunker in different port but without dealing with this issue.

A major reason for that is we are expecting more “blending” happening in 2020, with a concern on homogeneous and compatibility, the fuel oil blended in different port could potentially be unstable and have potential hazard. Consider most of the HSFO now is direct from refinery to storage tank to your vessel, there are extra variables now in the future LSFO. For all the commercial manager out there, here is all the stability / compatibility issue in a nutshell :

” possibility of creation of sludge, which jam your filter and pipe, maintenance fee is higher , more time spend in shipyard and constant nagging from your technical department (along with love call / love letter from your ships ) “

Few things you can do in order to prepare this

  1. Discuss with C/E on the tank allocation in case a compatibility issue is detected
  2. Study ISO 8217:2017 which published in few months which will cover the new LSFO standard and all the other parameters
  3. Always check the source of the cargo and keep track on any unusual signal e.g. filter clogging and engine malfunction.

More on 2020 soon

Until Next time!
