It seems obvious that we should include a vessel name in the enquiry, but when we first started we also feel puzzled, if i want to order X amount of fuel at this port in this time, how does the vessel name affect the price or the offer ?? This through process is the fundamental of most of the new buyer just ask “indication” and failure of the early bunker platform / exchange style company on those” just give me the price of 380cst and i will fill in a vessel later” , so how does vessel name affect the bunker procurement procedure ?
- Legal point of view
Due to complicity of maritime law (in different country and law system), just for a bro-science style simplification, vessel name is needed in a valid legally bonded contract. Also, when the supplier barge delivered the bunker to your good vessel, there is a change in the title of the bunkers which is also crucial when considering the risk of the bunkers.
2. Operation point of view
Very often supplier will ask for IMO even you give out the vessel name, the reason because if you have a vessel name “Sea angel” or “Ocean fortunate ” etc, that’s like to find John in America ( P.S. there are 5.74 Million John FYI ). Supplier need to check whats the GRT and DWT of the vessel, as some supplier have only small barges and its a challenge if your vessel is a VLCC while they through is a tiny general cargo carrier.
3. Commercial point of view
Sometimes supplier try to avoid certain vessel ( more detailed on HERE ). Also supplier want to know are there any potential problem of the vessels ? are the vessel being arrested recently or currently under vessel ? which port did the vessel been to ? are their any taxation problem like GST should consider ?
