Floating storage in bunkering

Not as cool as VLCC but still pretty cool

First half of 2020 is definitely one of the most fruitful year for VLCC owners. Actually in bunkering, floating storage is also a common strategy for SEA physical supplier.

First way is having a floating storage become your own terminal. Many major supplier will employ a bunker tanker act as a floating storage. Simply by scheduling the tanker to load a large quantity of bunker and anchor in specific location. When there is urgent order or bunker barge need to replenish, they can just sail to the floating storage , load the cargo and supply the vessel.  By doing so they could save waiting time in the terminal and maintain prompt supply..

Another way to use floating storage is to supply vessels directly. Its common to see this practice in high sea bunkering and small vessel supply. Many years ago in Hong Kong, motor ship association owned a MGO bunker barge and anchor at inner anchorage, every now and then they will go to terminal and loaded few hundred MT of MGO.  The ship will then nominate the order from the office and instruct the vessel go and alongside the bunker tanker and receive MGO.  Since most motor ship required 800liter to 2MT of MGO, it would be extra cost if supplier sail a MGO barge alongside and perform all procedure. While with this floating barge, motor ship can just go and alongside the barge themselves, get the oil and continue their work, its a win win for both party.

Until next time
