Sorry your Calorific Value is too low….

Nope not about your diet but about your bunker

Recently read a interesting article regarding a company suggesting a new approach on bunker procurement, which suggest buyer should consider the Calorific value, which is the heat value or in layman term, fuel that produce more energy during combustion. Its an interesting approach and i love that conversation as throughout my 13 years of experience i had one Chinese company ask me during a meeting what is the combustion value for 380cst / 180cst and MGO and i stood there like an idiot. However from a POV of a bunker trader / physical supplier i have below concern

1. Its not practical to measure a supplier’s fuel Calorific value

First of all, supplier don’t know, there are so many things to check its probably not the first thing supplier want to know the Calorific value for every batch of cargo ; In addition,  most supplier source from different source, its almost meaningless to keep track of the value. Same for bunker trader, most trader brought bunkers from different supplier so they wont know either.

2. What could my time have more return on investment on other parameters of the fuel ?

Perhaps for the same time given you got better of investment in time for checking the combustion compatibility of the LSFO you just bunkered in Singapore with the last batch of LSFO in Zhoushan. Checking the viscosity and other parameters within the ISO standard could be more important and helpful in terms of technical management.

Imagine a guy ask you advice about approaching girls in night club , he spend hours thinking about what perfume he should wear while the most important piece of advice you could give is ” Speak louder so she know you exist !! “. Don’t be obsessed about the final 2% before we get the fundamental 98% right.

Until next time !

What do think about this ?
