Did IMO kill Santa ?

See you in the office on Christmas eve

Throughout the last decade of my career i never seen such a busy December, in the past this timing most client in Europe is already going home to set up Christmas tree or preparing “business” trip in Asia which normally seen a caller-ID from Thailand, this year i have seen one of the most chaotic December ever in the following event :

1. Where is the VLSFO cargo
Russia, China, Malaysia, Singapore, most ports in Far East and SEA already screaming for cargo and we seen ship owner shift 4th ports and yet to find any VLSFO cargo. Many client already send out enquiry date range from early January and still many supplier are not sure about the cargo status after Christmas. As mentioned in previous article, the practicality to switch is not only up to the vessel and shipping companies itself, if the terminal / supplier cannot supply the VLSFO then what could the vessel do ? wait for days , weeks or months ? or charterer a barge from the nearest bunker port to come and supply the vessel (assume the port authority allowed – and the bill is gonna be BAD ). Going cold-turkey on the “bad” HSFO to VLSFO suddenly is like decided to go Vegan on 1st January but no idea what other protein source will be, the consequence is BAD.

2. De-bunkering frency
with less than 20days to go before the total replacement of VLSFO, many owner also busy looking for supplier to de-bunker and finding vendor to do the job is not easy ! With many port de-bunkering is basically de-slopping, so instead of receiving a small fund on your on-spec bunker, you have to pay a fee to “clean” your tank instead. Even you could find supplier to do it, the demand is wayyyy over the operation capacity we receive many de-bunker supplier in Singapore that their schedule is 95% fulled for the remaining month

Wish all of you have a Merry Christmas and until next time
